Daphne is derived from the Greek word 'daphne' which means 'laurel' or 'bay tree'. In Greek mythology, Daphne was a nymph who was transformed into a laurel tree to escape the advances of the god Apollo. The name was popularized in the 19th century by the poem 'The Progress of the Rose' by William Makepeace Thackeray.
